Attic renovation is an important business. Your house is kept warm by the insulation in your attic, and if the insulation is deteriorating, then it will be less efficient, and you will be paying extra on your heating bill. You could also be endangering the comfort and even health of your family by ignoring an insulation system which is beginning to break down.
So, if you have decided that you need to renovate the insulation in your attic, you first need to carry out a thorough inspection. Knowing exactly how much more insulation you will need can keep your costs down. When you are checking out the materials you are going to use, you should try to find quality insulation materials, rather than the lower quality cheap materials, because they will last for longer and hence be a better investment.
The most common types of insulation materials are batt, blown and rigged insulation. Batts are made from fiber glass, and come in rolls which usually fit neatly between the joints in your rafters. This makes them easy to install. They are moisture resistant, but not water resistant, and if they get wet they will be significantly damaged.
Blown insulation, or loose fill insulation, is the cheapest option, as well as being the easiest to use. It is usually made of wool fibers, mineral fibers, or chopped fibreglass, and is used on horizontal spaces, such as in the ceiling.
Rigged insulation comes in sheets which measure 8 feet by 2 feet, and can be made of polystyrene or other materials.
When you are doing an attic renovation and fixing up the insulation you do need to be patient, and think about the long term benefits for your family as well as money savings. If well installed and maintained, your insulation system will also make your house worth more, if you decide to sell it later.
